  • If you look around the office, at the people under your stewardship, do you see friends, colleagues, associates or subordinates? Perhaps the bigger question is: does it really matter, as long as the job gets done?

    The old saying, ‘Keep your friends close and your enemies closer’, is always worth remembering. In terms of management and performance, though, do we – or rather, should we – think of people in such terms?

    Instead of being emotional, perhaps we should distance ourselves: considering our employees as resources to be organized for competitive advantage; as if they were pieces on a strategic chess board.
